The sad fact is that most people procrastinate on the top 10 percent of items. However, these are the most valuable and important – the “vital few”.  Instead, they busy themselves with the least important 90 percent, the “trivial many,” which contribute very little to their success.

How To Apply The 90/10 Rule

Here’s what you should do in order to effectively apply the 90/10 rule to goal setting and to your overall productivity.

First, take a piece of paper and write down ten goals. Then ask yourself: If you could only accomplish one of the goals on that list today, which one goal would have the greatest positive impact on your life?

After completing this exercise, your choice will determine the most important goal. Achieving this goal will help you much more than any of the other goals on your list combined.  Ensure that you continue to work at the goal which you’ve chosen as the most valuable all the time.

This does NOT mean the other 90% of your work goes away, but you must make three choices for the other 90%:

A) Delegate it
B) Automate it
C) Stop doing it

Accomplish The Biggest Task First

Often, you may see people who appear to be busy all day long but seem to accomplish very little. This is almost always the case as they are busy working on tasks that are of low value. On the other hand, they are procrastinating on the one activity that could make a real difference to their companies and to their careers.

The most valuable task you can do each day is often the hardest and most complex. The payoff and rewards will make completing them truly worth it.

Before you begin work, always ask yourself, “Is this task in the top 10 percent of my activities or in the bottom 90 percent?”

The rule to adhere to here is: resist the temptation to clear up small things first!

Choosing to start your day working on low-value tasks, will cause you to soon develop the habit of always starting and working on low-value tasks.

Finally, let’s discuss this study that has just been done about the attitudes of rich people versus poor people in regard to goal setting. The study found that 85% of rich people have one big goal that they work on all the time.

Therefore, if you want to be wealthy, perhaps you should do what wealthy people do. Pick one big goal and work on it all the time. If you do, it will change your life.

As outlined by Eliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox in their  “Theory of Constraints” –  is a set of tools to achieve positive change agents which can be used to manage constraints, thereby increasing profits. Thus making it possible to use this powerful principle to dream big dreams and live without limits. This is one of the greatest breakthroughs in modern thinking.

Goldratt found that in every process when seeking to accomplish any goal, there is a bottleneck or choke cord that serves as a constraint on the process. This constraint seeks to set the speed at which you achieve any particular goal. If you concentrate all of your creative energies and attention on alleviating the constraint, you can speed up the process faster than by doing any other single thing.

Allow me to illustrate using an example. Well, this is actually a true story. Imagine this! I was a very successful Project Manager for an AMAZING company. I was working 10-12 hours a day average. I was SLAVING my butt off for years and years. And I wasn’t seeing the progress of my hard work and dedication as I was doing everything in my business myself.

After working 10 – 12 hours a day for the years which ran by, I’d be exhausted. Needless to say, I was also watching my family fall apart. My stress levels were off the charts but I felt trapped. I needed my job to provide for the needs and well-being of my family but the time I was spending at my job made the home situation worse. I wanted to give up!

BUT THANK GOODNESS I DIDN’T GIVE UP!!!

My utilization of the 90/10 lifestyle has afforded me with the drive to dream big and succeed. I quit my job at that amazing company and went into business for myself. I knew that I had a great skill and was certain that after so many years of polishing my craft that I could competently handle my own business.

Bearing in mind that learning should never stop, you can unlearn the things which debilitate your progress. It is possible to get yourself out of the situations which you have gotten yourself into, but you must be willing to identify the constraints which prevent you from seeing the silver-lining which accompany the clouds.

Setting up your business part-time is not easy. Because the pitfalls are not lacking. Among them: the lack of time. Trust me, I know all about it, and I will share with you my unique method that will enable you to free up that one hour a day and to turn it into to a profitable online business from home.

Fortunately, it is possible to free up to 1 hour per day or more!

Honestly, it is not by chance that I tell you this, because we all have the dream of saving an hour or more a day; even those who have answered no to my questions above. Whether it is to start your activity on the Internet, to have free time for yourself or to spend more time with your loved ones, this hour is available for you to use as you wish.

But it is not something you can do by snapping your fingers or manipulating a magic wand.

You know it already: we all have 24 hours in our days.

On average, in a day, you have 8 hours of work (if you still are on the 9 to 5); 6 to 8 hours of sleep; 1 to 2 hours of transport; 2 hours to eat all the meals of the day and 1 hour to care for our body, shower or take a bath.

If we had to be content with that, we can conclude that we have about 7 hours of free time each day.

In theory, it should not be a problem, because even if we have a job in the meantime, we still have plenty of time to work on a project.

Unfortunately in practice, it’s not at all like that.

Because in addition to hours of work, sleep and others, we find ourselves with other activities to take care of, namely hobbies, entertainment, sports, artistic, social, charity, etc.

As a human being, it is only natural that we all have these sorts of activities in our daily lives.

Otherwise, we would spend all our days dying of boredom with a deck of cards in hand, as was the case for our great grandparents.

Suddenly, instead of finding yourself with 7 hours of free time, you find yourself in reality with crumbs.

Between you and me, it’s a big problem!

Because for most of us, it is this lack of time that we need to create our own little profitable business.

Some manage to build their business, but for a large majority of us (and this may be your case), we have a lot of trouble to kick start our business.

So much that we may end up with a nervous breakdown if we are not careful, exhausted with all our un-used strengths and resources, and disgusted for not being able to enjoy life like many other successful entrepreneurs.

Fortunately, a problem always has a solution

Apart from moving to settle on Jupiter or Saturn, it is scientifically impossible to live more than 24 hours in a day.

So, it is quite useless to try to lengthen the duration of your days.

Since we cannot create days of 25 hours or more, how can we manage to free one hour per day under such conditions?

Before I explain how you can save time in your days, you first need to know why you cannot find that time for your business project.

It’s very important to know that, because it will save you a lot of time, effort and maybe even money.

So, let’s go through it together …

Why you cannot find time to start your own business


Generally, when we cannot start our own business, whether on the Internet or elsewhere, we instantly believe that the problem is the lack of time.

That is to say, we cannot even fit an hour for a project into our personal agenda.

And to be honest with you, I am well placed to tell you that, because I had exactly the same problem. When I wanted to build my business at the same time as had a j.o.b to go to.

But that’s not all, because early 2001, I decided to embark on the entrepreneurial adventure, especially on the Internet. So of course, at first, I thought that I did not have the time to start anything and thought of keeping a job at the same time. Because I thought that setting up an activity would require a lot of work, a lot of time, a lot of energy and a lot of money to get started.

But, despite all the constraints I had, such as commuting distance, sports activities, the big stack of homework and the hours to train me in marketing, I managed to find some free time.

I don’t mean to tell you that I managed to free myself 10 hours a day as if by magic, it would be to pretend to be a Mythomaniac by telling you that.

On the other hand, I managed to free myself an hour a day at least. And in some exceptional cases, I even managed to free myself 4 hours in my days.

In short, all this to say that despite my research, my job alternately and all the constraints I had, I could find free time to work on my business project.

First of all, are we really lacking free time?

Honestly, in 95% of cases, it is very likely that you are are not short of any free time.

Because in reality, you have more free time than you think.

We are not going to lie to each other: if at this moment you can read these lines, it is because somewhere you have managed to find some free time.

Even if it’s not the amount of free time you’ve been hoping to have 🙂

IcebergTo put it simply, free time is like an iceberg. It is known that 90% of an iceberg is under the surface of the water (this is called the hidden side of the iceberg).

In the same way that we underestimate the size of an iceberg, we all tend to underestimate the free time we have.

So, one may wonder if the real problem is not the lack of time, but rather a lack of priority.

That is, the real problem is that we do not know how to differentiate between a priority activity and an activity that is not.

That’s why we cannot find free time to move forward on our project, whether to launch an activity on the Internet or otherwise.

And you know why ? Because we have not defined our priorities in advance.

Basically, it’s like playing roulette by betting $1 on all the numbers at each turn.

In this way, you may win a few rounds, but you will have a hard time winning the game; or even less to win the jackpot, because you will cause a lot of loss in the meantime.

However, if you decided to bet big on a limited number of numbers, then you have more chances to win the game and to hit the jackpot.

And so, if you come to understand that your real problem is not a lack of time, but a lack of priority, then you have taken a big step forward.

Because understanding this, you will realize that the time needed to work on your business project has always been there. It was just necessary to make it a priority.

Gain back the control of your smartphone

We are not going to lie, we are all more or less addicted to smartphones, at a point where we spend more than an hour a day on it (according to an article I read on Forbes).

Why? Because it’s texting, notifications, apps, instant messengers, and so on, that push us to spend a lot of time on our smartphones.

So, it’s no longer you who make the law, it’s your smartphone that makes the law. It’s your smartphone that decides what you have to do with your days.

And that is very annoying, especially if you want to start your activity on the web and become free of your boss.

So of course, the idea behind all this, it’s going to be to return the process; that is to say, to become again the person who decides whether or not, you want to spend time on your smartphone.

Plane modeHow to do that? First, you have to remove all notifications from your smartphone, ie Facebook, Skype, Messenger, Mail, etc.

Then, make it a habit of putting your smartphone in “airplane mode” every time you work on your project (that’s what I did, right now, it’s in airplane mode).

And finally, last thing, set a time frame where you do not have the right to touch your smartphone and one where you will have the right to use it.

In this way, you will become the ONLY master of your smartphone🙂

Get to bed early and work earlier in the morning

You know, many of us want to start an activity on the web, but for many, there is THE BOSS who is always present. Which forces us to work in the evening on our project.

Unfortunately, it’s a bad idea.

Why ? Because in general, when we come home from work, we do not feel like working on our project. We want to do only one thing: to sit on the couch!

It is not for nothing that we jump on the sofa at the end of the day, because a day of work exhausts us literally.

Then, once we hit the couch, we tend to postpone until tomorrow what we promised us to do tonight; that is to say, work on our business project.

Then we do the same thing again the next day; the day after tomorrow; then the following day; and so on. It becomes a vicious circle.

Between you and me, we’ve all done it before. Including me.

So, if you really want to save an hour a day for your business project, postpone it and do the work in the early morning.

In short, how? Already, you need to define the time that you will need to work on your project in the morning, in general, a minimum of an hour.

Then you will have to learn to get up earlier than usual, for example, to get up at 6:00 am instead of 7:00 am.

Not to mention that you will have to set the time you have to go to bed earlier to make sure you get up earlier.

And finally, get in the habit of working early on your project.

In this way, you will save an hour each day to start your activity; you will tend to procrastinate less and above all, you will have the evening just to rest. Pretty good plan huh! 😉

Do not overload your day

Often, when we want to launch an activity on the web and we do not have all day to do it. We tend to overload things to do, despite the short time available.

For example, write an article, make a podcast, reply to e-mails, reply to comments, update our blog, modify our landing page, create a logo, contact a partner, etc.

Well, it’s good to want to do your best to start your activity on the web. It shows that you are serious about it.

Only thing, if you really want to save time, know that it is not a good idea to proceed in this way.

Why?

Because it is not by doing many things that you will start your activity on the web 10 times faster.

You can do a lot of things in a very short time, like 30 tasks in an hour; maybe it’s possible.

Except that among these 30 tasks performed, most of them have no impact on your web activity.

Do you know why most tasks are useless? Because there are really very few things that have a huge impact on your business project.

For example, updating your WordPress blog has no more impact than posting a guest article to a blogger.

Because by publishing on your blog, you will gain a lot of visibility; while by doing a simple update on your blog, you might not have earned a single extra potential customer.

So, instead of saving time by doing a lot of things, you waste your time doing unnecessary things.

I know, it’s completely counter-intuitive what I’m telling you, even I did not believe it a few years ago.

Yet, I learned the truth by doing the exact opposite. I can tell you that it hurt my ego when I perceived the difference.

In short, how can you avoid doing this?

The first thing you need to do is understand that the amount of finished work does not mean that you will progress faster.

Then, from the moment you understand that, you need to identify the essential tasks of your business.

For this, you will need to make a table in 2 columns.

One column for all essential tasks for your business and another column for all non-essential tasks.

To give you a concrete example, here is a table of my personal tasks that I find essential for me:

  • Publish articles
  • Publish podcasts
  • Train myself in efficiency and marketing.

As well as tasks that are not:

  • Create a logo
  • Make the promotion on Facebook
  • Analyze my competitors on Twitter
  • Update my WordPress blog
  • Look for a new WordPress plugin
  • Pay for Facebook or Google AdWord advertising
  • Improve the design of my blog
  • Improve the design of my emails
  • Create business cards
  • Etc.

I advise you to reserve a good half hour to complete your table of essential tasks and non-essential tasks. Once completed, you can continue to Part 2 of how to make money from home in your spare time. (Part 2 coming soon).

I want to discuss how to talk to prospects. So many people go out and immediately want to give prospects every fact and figure about the product, compensation plan, company, etc. In my opinion, this strategy is jumping the gun.

In order to get someone who is focused on something else to potentially consider what you have, you first have to get them to open their mind a bit. I’ve heard about and used a lot of different techniques to achieve this over the years. The best way I’ve found, is to act like a consultant.

If you act like a consultant, instead of a sales person, you’re going to build more trust and have a better conversation. Consultants ask questions to try to figure out the situation, and a key strategy is to talk to people about entrepreneurship – not your product, compensation plan, or company. So, ask them, “Have you ever gone into business for yourself?” Their answer will affect how you go forward.

If they say, “No, I haven’t because they’ve never really had a desire,” then they may be employee minded. This is important to figure out up front because you don’t want to push an employee minded person to be an entrepreneur. Of course, you can always ask if they would be interested in becoming entrepreneurial minded, if you gave them a way to do it. They may still not be interested, and that’s fine.

They might answer your question with, “No, I haven’t because…” and they list the reasons why they didn’t go into business for themselves like they were too afraid, didn’t have the skills, or not enough money. Well, then you can offer them a solution. Network Marketing has the friendliest environment for a person with an entrepreneurial mindset who has the dream but doesn’t have the vehicle. We can offer them a way with very low risk, flexible time, and all of the business aspects taken care of for them.

The might answer with, “Yes, I have tried, and it was a disaster because I didn’t have enough money or time, the product wasn’t good, I didn’t have the skill, etc.” Again, you can offer them the same solutions through Network Marketing.

Or they might say, “Yes, I am a current business owner and it’s a disaster.” They feel like the business owns them, and they give you a list of challenges. Network Marketing can be their solution. We offer the ability to let someone else to the heavy lifting, the risk is low, and there are no employees, overhead, or personal guarantees. All of those challenges that come with a tradition small business are not present for a Network Marketer. You can offer them an easier path.

So, have this conversation about entrepreneurship with your prospects. No matter where it goes, you will have a solution for them, and have an easy entry to talk to them about your product, company, compensation plan, etc.

Earl Nightingale’s The strangest secret in the World

Earl Nightingale on: "My Greatest Discovery!"

Earl's father had left the family when Earl was just twelve years old. 

He was living in a government-issued tent in Long Beach, California with his mother and two brothers. It was during the Great Depression, and like many thousands of families, the Nightingales would have been homeless if not for the help of the government’s Works Progress Administration (WPA), which created 8 million jobs and redistributed food, clothing and housing to the poor.

The disparity between the lives of the haves and have-nots was vast, and it troubled Nightingale. “As a youngster, I didn’t know anything about a sense of achievement, but I was all too aware of being poor,” he says in his book Earl Nightingale’s Greatest Discovery. “It didn’t seem to bother the other kids, but it bothered me. 

What made it all the more exasperating to me, as a boy of 12, was to be poor in Southern California, where there seemed to be so many who were rich…. I decided to find out why some people were rich while so very many of us were poor.”

"What is the secret of success?"

He spent 17 long years seeking the answer. During that time, he joined the Marines, was posted to Hawaii aboard the U.S.S. Arizona, and was one of the few hundred men who survived the battleship’s bombing in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Nightingale described the chaos and tragedy of the attack: scrambling to battle stations as bombs crippled the ship, seeing friends killed amid shrapnel and flames, getting blown into the water by the concussion of a blast and finally making it safely to shore with help from a Marine officer.

His experience left him with a conviction that he was spared for a reason, says his widow, Diana Nightingale. “He was a great believer in paying the price for what you wanted—whether that was personal freedom or the freedom of your country,” she says. “He came home from the war with great expectations and went about the business of life."

“He was a man who really did live in the present. He felt the past served as an education and we should take what was valuable from it. He said the future wasn’t promised to anyone and that you should live each day fully and to the best of your ability.”

In 1950, at the age of 29, he found the secret of success in Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich: “We become what we think about.”

“While reading, it suddenly dawned upon me that I had been reading the same truth over and over again for many years. And all of a sudden, there they were, the words, in the proper order that I had been looking for 17 years: the astonishing truth that 'we become what we think about.' Those six simple words, in that order, revolutionized my life.”

Seizing new opportunities, Nightingale bought a small Franklin Life Insurance agency and gave pep talks to his salesmen every week.

The talks proved so popular that his manager asked him to record something to be played while Nightingale was away for two weeks.

“I thought about it, turning the ideas over and over in my mind. Finally, I asked myself, ‘What would you tell your children if you found you had only a short time to live? What advice could you pass on to them that would assist them in living highly productive, very successful lives?’ I awakened at 4 the next morning with the answer to that question clearly in mind.”

He got up and wrote down his ideas, and by noon the following day, had recorded the essay. “I called what I had written and recorded The Strangest Secret.” He chose the name because it seemed strange to him that such a simple truth could be secret to so many.

Word spread from insurance agents to their relatives and friends, and demand grew. “The Strangest Secret was the child that grew into the audio recording industry. With no effort on my part whatsoever, with no advertising of any kind, The Strangest Secret became a national best-seller. 

I was ill-prepared to handle the avalanche of orders for that recording. My good friend Lloyd Conant, then owner of Specialty Mail Services, stepped into the breach. He was happy and abundantly prepared to handle the business end of my sudden good fortune. 

The orders continued to pour in from every section of the country. It was astonishing how the word about that recorded message got around. And that was the beginning of what was to become—officially in 1960—the Nightingale-Conant Corporation.”

The recording sold more than 1 million copies, eventually becoming the first spoken-word recording to reach Gold Record status.

In 1959, Nightingale began a radio program called Our Changing World. The show, a five-minute uplifting message, became the largest syndicated radio show of its kind anywhere and was distributed to a worldwide audience via Nightingale-Conant. At its peak, about 1,000 radio stations carried the show.

I personally always loved listening to - and reading - the enlightening words of Earl Nightingale.

The Nightingale-Conant partnership was dubbed a “mastermind alliance” by W. Clement Stone because the skills of both men were so complementary. Between them, they built Nightingale-Conant into the premier audio self-improvement company in the country.

Although Nightingale died over a quarter century ago, his books and audio programs continue to inspire people around the world. Best-selling author and motivational speaker Zig Ziglar says, “Earl Nightingale has inspired more people toward success and fortune than any other motivational speaker on the planet.”

As has been said by wiser people than me, "We all stand on the shoulders of giants."

Just look at this list: Napoleon Hill stood on the shoulders of Andrew Carnegie and all the other titans of business and knowledge he interviewed before he wrote his book, Think and Grow Rich.

Earl Nightingale stood on the shoulders of Hill and Stone.

Zig Ziglar stood on the shoulders of Earl Nightingale.

Furthermore, each of these stood on the shoulders of such giants as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson - who stood on the shoulders of such people as St. Augustine, Paul of Tarsus, and Aristotle.

Now, you and I have the opportunity to stand on the shoulders of ALL these giants.

A very important take away - in my opinion - from all of this - applied to Internet marketing - or any field of endeavor, for that matter - has nothing to do with Earl's "words of wisdom".

Rather think about where he came from.  All too many people today would have used..."growing up fatherless, in the middle of the Great Depression, living in a government-issued tent with his mother and two brothers," as an excuse for a life of crime and failure.

An excuse to expect and DEMAND preferential treatment from others.

However, Earl did the exact opposite and used his youthful experience of a life of dismal reality to bootstrap himself to a place of world-wide prominence.

You could do the same - if...

...IF you have the proper mindset to do so.

Back to what Napoleon Hill said,  “We become what we think about.”

7 Things Great Leaders Never Say

As a leader, your words are powerful. Make sure you’re using them in the right way.

“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.”  —Rudyard Kipling

As a leader, motivating and inspiring people is one of your most important tasks, and the words you say (and how you say them) are your most powerful tool. And if you strive to be a greatleader, there are things you should never say.

Here are seven statements to take out of our vocabulary completely:

1. “There are no problems, only opportunities.”

Yes, problems do come up, and denying them doesn’t make them go away. Although the phrase is often used to encourage team members to think more creatively, it can also communicate that the leader isn’t willing to listen when there are real challenges to overcome. It makes the leader look out of touch and weak.

The fix: Always be willing to listen to your employees, and ensure they know it. The result will be employees who are much more willing to tackle challenges and bring you solutions.

2. “Don’t do anything without asking me first.”

Unless someone is new to a job, micromanaging their every step not only hinders their growth, but is just as unproductive for the leader. When leaders micromanage everything, they bottleneck the process and lower employee morale. Employees are productive when they have meaningful work and the resources and authority to do their job.

The fix: Instead of micromanaging, clarify expectations ahead of time, check on employees appropriate to their training and ability, and follow up with feedback on how they are doing. The goal is to put the right people in the right places and enable them to succeed.

3. “Don’t bring me any bad news.”

Telling employees this doesn’t make the bad news go away, but it can keep a leader from finding out about it in time for it to be managed. Colin Powell, former U.S. secretary of state said, “Bad news isn’t wine. It doesn’t improve with age.” It’s always better to tackle a problem when it’s small than wait until it’s costly or causes bad publicity.

The fix: Create an environment where employees are encouraged to bring up issues when they appear so they can be solved.

4. “It’s not personal, it’s business.”

Business is all about relationships, and relationships are personal. Employees spend the majority of their waking hours at work. Leaders who ignore their feelings will create resentment and have a difficult time carrying out their goals.

The fix: Create a culture where employees know you have a passion for your work, but empathy for people. Demonstrate that you respect them by treating them the way they want to be treated.

5. “We don’t need any more ideas.”

Leaders often reject creative ideas not because those ideas don’t have potential, but because they aren’t capable of handling the fear, uncertainty and anxiety that goes with backing an idea that may be innovative but has potential risk, such as loss or negative judgment from their boss. After all, if the leader backs an unproven idea and the idea goes down in flames, they believe they do, too. The unintended result is that an organization doesn’t thrive and progress without an influx of innovative (and sometimes edgy) ideas.

The fix: Open yourself up to new ideas and ways of thinking. Take employees’ ideas seriously, and get an unbiased person you trust to evaluate how a new idea could be implemented with changes in strategy or process.

6. “I don’t want any interruptions.”

Leaders get interrupted a lot. You need time to plan and reflect, but if your door is always closed and employees never come to update you, it’s probably because the message is clear: You are too busy to be bothered. The downside is you don’t find out what is going well or what needs your guidance.

The fix: Stop what you are doing, turn away from your computer and really listen to your people. When you need to complete an important task and don’t have time to listen, try saying, “I really want to be able to listen to this because it’s an important topic. Please come back in an hour so I can give it my complete attention.” That way, you will stay informed and still be able to complete the things you need a longer block of time to do.

7. “Failure is not an option.”

Leaders who adopt this philosophy instill fear and anxiety in their employees because mistakes are not allowed. No one can take risks or try anything new because they always have to play it safe. This is the best way for leaders to build a stagnant culture and a company that cannot compete in the marketplace. Failure is really a teaching tool to bring us to something greater.

The fix: Ensure your employees know mistakes aren’t fatal—the goal is to discover mistakes quickly, correct them and move forward. If you wait for flawless, you will never begin anything new. The real failure is fear of developing an idea until it’s perfect.
